POSITION SUMMARY:

The Temple Managing Director, will perform dedicated administrative duties, database management, and special projects support for Port Jewish Center (PJC). In this support role, they will work closely with PJC’s Rabbi, Education Director and lay leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Office
Be the “voice of the office” as the first point of contact when congregants or any other person calls
Calendar: Manage, post & distribute Synagogue Calendar – (Public & Internal)
Coordinate Events (auxiliaries & membership), includes creating event pages and registration forms.
Manage phone system

Membership
Manage Membership Database (Shulcloud), includes tracking all donations.
Communicate effectively and personably with congregants and make sure their needs are met
Communicate with prospective members and oversee introductions to clergy, staff, and lay leaders.
Support Rabbi and lay leadership with membership and volunteer growth and involvement.

Rabbi Support
Directly assist and maximize the effectiveness of the rabbi in all administrative tasks including answering the phone, managing calendars and schedules, maintaining files, assisting with event coordination and logistics, and communication
Ensure the effectiveness of all aspects of the rabbi’s interactions and communications with constituent groups, leadership, staff, professional colleagues and community representatives by triaging incoming calls, emails, and requests to clergy, and scheduling appointments, pastoral visits, classes, calls and managing follow-ups.
Support rabbi by managing projects, attending meetings, following up on project tasks, to-do’s, and time-sensitive action items

Leadership Support
Work with staff and lay leadership to prepare necessary documents for monthly board meetings.
Work with co-presidents to follow up with board members and committee chairs regarding ongoing projects.

Publicity & Communication (for each: write, publish, post, and/or design)
Oversee and coordinate synagogue communications. Assist with the creation and updating of marketing and presentation materials, with special attention on program highlights.
Printed Publications – Newsletter, Flyers, Signage
Email Announcements (Mailchimp & Shulcloud)
Website and Calendar (Shulcloud)
Keep website up to date.
Build annual social media content calendar and coordinate with internal staff on articles and initiatives to feature
Develop engaging content that continues to build our audience and generate engagement across multiple social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google Business, and Yelp).

Building
Serve as primary liaison to maintenance staff and all building users.
Oversee the operation and maintenance of the building and grounds.
Operational documentation – keep records of how everything works.
Coordinate the scheduling and use of the facilities including proper set-up, building access and security for all events (both Synagogue and outside rentals).
Maximize building utilization, storage areas, vendors and supplies.

Misc.
Attend synagogue committee meetings, fundraising events, or programs as needed
Support other PJC staff with projects and programs as required
Other duties as assigned
Ability to grow position over time, as desired

HOURS:: 24 hours/week; Days of work as arranged upon hiring

COMPENSATION: $25-30/hour depending on experience

About Port Jewish Center

Port Jewish Center (PJC) is a small Reform community dedicated to living vibrant, active Jewish lives. Our congregation started out of necessity when the larger reform congregation in the community closed its doors to new members, and this has shaped our approach both in-house and in the community. Today, as when we started, PJC is committed to openness, equality, the education and spiritual growth of each individual, and outreach to our local community. We intend to retain each of these core values as we grow.
PJC is inclusive; our High Holiday services are open to anyone at no charge (no tickets needed). We welcome all individuals and families, traditional and nontraditional, as well as interfaith couples. We include non-Jews in our services, including Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. While we value tradition, our congregation is open to different expressions of what it means to be a Reform Jew.
PJC has never turned away a member because of financial status. PJC is committed to every individual. Each child has his or her own Bar or Bat Mitzvah service, leading both the Friday night and Saturday liturgies. Our religious school classes lead Sabbath services on a regular basis. We also have an active Hebrew High School and an enthusiastic youth group.
PJC’s History

In 1970, eleven Port Washington families formed Port Jewish Center. They had no rabbi and no building, but they did have an ark, built by one of the members, a Torah rescued from the Holocaust, a pioneering spirit and commitment to practicing Judaism and to giving their children a Jewish education.
In the first year, congregants managed to organize a religious school, build a Sukkah, engage a cantor and a part-time Rabbi, and conduct High Holy Day services where everyone, member or not, was welcome. Cantor Herb Strauss served, initially in a volunteer position, from 1970 until his death in 2007. His 37 year tenure offered long-term stability to PJC as we welcomed a series of student rabbis to our growing congregation. By 1981 PJC had its first permanent Rabbi, Donna Berman, who led the congregation for twelve years. In 1993, Rabbi Beth Davidson became our leader for the next twelve years. In 2005, Rabbi Sheila Goleboy began a eight year term as our congregation’s rabbi. Our congregation acquired its permanent home on Manorhaven Boulevard in Port Washington in 1986 and successfully completed a major expansion and renovation in 2000.
Presently, PJC is led by Rabbi Alysa Mendelson Graf and has 100 family member units, drawing its membership from Port Washington and nearby towns. It has a thriving religious school and a wide range of religious, educational and social programs. In our nearly 50-year history, the underlying values that shaped our congregation have not changed. PJC continues to welcome all who wish to worship with its warm, informal atmosphere and to encourage active participation in the life of our community. We strive to lead a Jewish life, to observe and preserve Jewish ritual and custom, to give our children a Jewish education, and to show compassion through acts of Tzedakah and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of loving kindness), both within the Jewish community and beyond.
Religious School

PJC’s Religious School strives to provide our children with a high quality and engaging Reform Jewish education that fosters a love of Judaism and a sense of responsibility to community and starts them on their journey of life-long Jewish learning.
Our Mission is to:

Teach the fundamentals of Torah, holidays, Hebrew and heritage needed to be an active member of the Jewish community using the full spectrum of teaching methods including experiential learning.
Foster in our students a meaningful, life-long relationship with God.
Instill in each student the value of service to others.
Include families in their child’s Jewish learning.
Build a sense of belonging and love of the Jewish community; in our school, in our synagogue, in Israel and around the world.

Schedule

Grades K-7 meets on Mondays from 4:15-6:15 pm
Hebrew High (Grades 7-10) meets Mondays from 6:30 to 8:15 pm.
